Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (15-23-4-1) had plenty of chances and hit multiple goal posts on Friday night, but couldn't get a puck to find the back of the net after the first period, falling 3-1 to the Moose Jaw Warriors (24-16-3-1).
The first period remained scoreless into the final minutes, despite solid chances for each team. Josh Davies had a partial break for the Broncos in the opening minutes that was denied by Carl Tetachuk, and Jagger Firkus was stopped on a shot from the slot by Isaac Poulter in the early going.
Grayson Burzynski was also robbed by the right pad of Tetachuk, cutting across the crease on a rebound chance but couldn't lift the puck over the right pad of the Warriors goaltender.
Swift Current opened the scoring with 1:25 remaining in the opening period. Kayden Sadhra-Kang worked the puck down the left-wing boards of the Warriors zone to Braeden Lewis, who was tied up by a defenceman.
Lewis saw Josh Filmon parked in between the circles, and hooked the puck to the slot for Filmon who quickly fired a shot past the blocker of Tetatchuk, scoring his 19th of the season to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
After some early pressure by the Broncos to start the second, the Warriors would tie the game. Atley Calvert came into the Broncos zone down the left wing and was able to beat Poulter over the glove with a shot from the circle 2:56 into the period.
After failing to connect on a power play shortly after the goal, the Broncos found themselves on the penalty kill just over the halfway mark of the period. Off a faceoff win, Maximus Wanner let a slap shot go from the blue line that was easily stopped by Poulter, but the rebound went right to Eric Alarie who fired in his 11th of the season to give Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead.
The Warriors carried that 2-1 lead into the intermission, outshooting the Broncos 21-17 through 40 minutes.
Moose Jaw added to their lead off an odd-man rush early in the third period. Robert Baco slid the puck across to Alarie on the left wing to score his second of the game, pushing Moose Jaw ahead 3-1 just 4:08 into the third.
Swift Current racked up chances in the third period, including Josh Fluker hitting the post on the power play, but couldn't solve Tetachuk as the final buzzer sounded for the 3-1 final score.
The Broncos are right back in action on Saturday night as they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (17-18-2-1).
Announced attendance was 1,311.
