Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - The Prince Albert Raiders (15-24-1-1) dropped a 5-2 game to the Edmonton Oil Kings (31-11-2-1) on Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
Cale Sanders had both of the Raiders goals in the loss.
The Oil Kings got on the board first with a power-play goal at the 6:21 mark of the first. Jake Neighbours hit Jakub Demek with a pass at the goal line. He quickly moved it to Josh Williams in the slot who fired a shot past Tikhon Chaika to make it 1-0.
Midway through the period, Edmonton struck again with the man advantage. Justin Sourdif got around a check at the blueline. His shot from the right faceoff circle beat Chaika on the short side to give Edmonton a 2-0 lead after the first.
In the second, Edmonton took advantage of another power play. Carter Souch faked a one-timer from the right faceoff circle before finding Sourdif in the slot. Sourdif's shot got through Chaika to put the Oil Kings up 3-0.
The Raiders nearly got on the board when Reece Vitelli made a move around Luke Prokop in the corner. He tried to find Carson Latimer at the backdoor for the one-timer, but Kaiden Guhle was able to get his skate on the puck to knock it away.
Sanders scored his first of the game with 2:16 to play in the middle frame. With Kolby Hay scrambling on the ice, Hayden Pakkala centered a pass to Sanders at the top of the crease. He made no mistake and buried the pass for his seventh goal of the year.
Before the end of the period, Vitelli found himself on a breakaway. However, Guhle was able to chase down his former teammate to deny him of the scoring chance.
The Oil Kings responded 4:06 into the third period. A clearing attempt hit Demek's skate to set up Neighbours alone in front of Chaika. Neighbours had time and space and was able to get his shot past the Raiders netminder to make it 4-1.
Five minutes later, Jalen Luypen was the beneficiary of a Demek pass from behind the net. His shot from the slot got past a sprawling Chaika to give the Oil Kings a 5-1 lead.
With 5:18 to play, Sanders struck for his second of the game. Eric Johnston found Sanders at the left faceoff circle with a slap pass. Sanders released a quick shot that got through Hay to give the Claresholm, Alta. product his eighth of the year, rounding out the scoring at 5-2.
Chaika finished the game with 35 saves in the loss. Hay made 17 saves to pick up the win for the Oil Kings.
The Raiders are back at home on Tuesday night when the Calgary Hitmen come to town for the final time this season. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office during working hours or at SaskTix.ca any time.
