Pats Lose Heartbreaker After Canes Score in Final Seconds

February 5, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

Lethbridge, Alta. - A power play goal from Joe Arntsen with 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation sunk the Pats on Friday night in Lethbridge.

The Hurricanes defenceman notched his fourth goal of the season on a shot from the middle point that changed direction on its way to the back of the net.

This particular contest saw plenty of special teams, first for the Pats with six consecutive power plays, and then for the Hurricanes, with four in a row.

Regina went ahead 2-0 on goals from Ryker Evans and Cole Dubinsky, but Lethbridge then stormed back with three consecutive goals in the second to momentarily take the lead. Evans' second tally of the game evened the score 3-3 before the second intermission.

In the third, 20-year-old Justin Hall regained the lead for Lethbridge, but Stanislav Svozil got the Pats the equalizer just two minutes later.

The Hurricanes were awarded a power play with 49 seconds to go in regulation, which led to Arntsen's game-winner.

The Pats ended the night 2-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

THE GOALS

1st Period

REG 1-0 at 2:20 - Ryker Evans (7), assisted by Logan Linklater // Off a defensive zone face-off, Evans quickly led the play up ice and dished to his left to Linklater. Linklater returned the favour, flipping a pass back to Evans just as he entered the zone. Evans ripped a shot just under the bar glove side past Jared Picklyk.

2nd Period

REG 2-0 at 0:29 - Cole Dubinsky (13), assisted by Connor Bedard and Tanner Howe // Dubinsky was set up for a one-time blast at the right circle by Bedard.

LET 1-2 at 1:33 - Alex Thacker (8), assisted by Corson Hopwo // Thacker tucked one just inside the post on a 2-on-2 shorthanded rush. The play was not reviewed even though the overhead replay didn't clearly show the puck go completely over the goal line.

LET 2-2 at 3:18 - Noah Chadwick (1), assisted by Logan McCutcheon and Justin Hall // Chadwick let a shot go from long distance that found its way through a bunch of traffic to tie the game.

LET 3-2 at 6:33 - Yegor Klavdiev (9), unassisted // Klavdiev pulled off an impressive toe-drag at the left circle that got him inside ice, and he then finished over the glove to give the home side the lead.

REG 3-3 at 10:18 - Ryker Evans (8), assisted by Cole Dubinsky and Connor Bedard // Dubinsky teed up Evans, feeding him from the goal line up to the top of the left circle, with Nijhoff providing the screen in front on a 5-on-3 power play.

3rd Period

LET 4-3 at 9:23 - Justin Hall (22), assisted by Ty Nash and Alex Thacker // After the Pats turned over the puck, Hall took a pass from Thacker and was allowed to walk right in, where he roofed it for his 22nd goal of the season.

REG 4-4 at 11:23 - Stanislav Svozil (2), assisted by Cole Dubinsky // Svozil started the rush from his own zone and then shot a pass ahead to Dubinsky on the left wing. Dubinsky stalled just inside the offensive zone, waiting for Svozil to rejoin the play and then gave him the puck in stride right up the middle. Svozil had enough space to rip a wrist shot go from the high slot, beating Picklyk cleanly.

LET 5-4 at 19:58 // Joe Arntsen (4), assisted by Justin Hall and Alex Thacker // Nijhoff blocked a point shot from Arntsen with five seconds to go, but Arntsen was able to let one more go from the middle point that got through, changing direction on its way into the back of the net.
