Oil Kings Power Their Way to Victory in Prince Albert

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Prince Albert, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings (31-11-2-1) got three power play goals in just over a period of work on their way to a commanding 5-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders (15-24-1-1) on Saturday night.

A determined Oil Kings team clocked in for work at the Art Hauser Centre, as for a second straight night they authored a dominating first period and this time they were rewarded with a couple of power play goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

At 6:21 of the first period, Josh Williams rocketed home his 21st goal of the season after Jakub Demek found him open in the slot with a nice one touch pass from along the Raiders goal line.

Just over three and a half minutes later, Justin Sourdif scored his first goal in an Oil Kings sweater, and 10th of the season, as he loaded up a wrist shot from the right-wing circle and snapped it short-side over the pad of Prince Albert goaltender Tikhon Chaika.

The Oil Kings ended up outshooting the Raiders 15-4 in the first period.

In the second period, the Oil Kings power play stayed hot as 5:29 into the middle stanza, Sourdif collected his second goal of the game as he was set up in the slot after Carter Souch faked a one-timer in the right-circle and instead slid the puck into Sourdif's wheelhouse that he'd elevate over the shoulder of Chaika.

The Raiders were able to get one goal back late in the period as Cale Sanders jammed home a loose puck during a goal-mouth scramble to keep the Raiders within two at the second intermission.

The Oil Kings restored their three-goal lead just 4:06 into the third period as Demek had a Prince Albert outlet pass tip off his skates to a wide-open Jake Neighbours in front of Chaika and the Oil Kings captain made no mistake muscling the puck home along the ice.

Just over five minutes later, the Oil Kings put the game to bed as Demek collected his third assist of the game after centering the puck in front of the Raiders net and having it deflect off the stick of Williams to a waiting Jalen Luypen who ripped home his 50th career WHL goal to make it 5-1.

Sanders collected his second goal of the game late in the third period, but it would to too little, too late for the Raiders.

Kolby Hay registered 17 saves for his ninth win of the season, while Chaika turned away 35 shots in the loss. The Oil Kings went three-for-seven on the power play, the Raiders were zero-for-three.

Next up, the Oil Kings return home as they welcome Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats to Rogers Place on Tuesday at 11:00 AM for Hockey Hooky.
