Backman, Cajanek, Tkachuk Representing At The Olympics

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues will send three players to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games to represent their respective countries. Defenseman Christian Backman will play for Sweden, forward Petr Cajanek will play for the Czech Republic and forward Keith Tkachuk will represent the United States.

Backman, 25, was named to his first Olympic Team and has represented Team Sweden at two IIHF World Championships (2004 and 2005) and two IIHF World Junior Championships (1999 and 2000). He helped Team Sweden capture the silver medal at the 2004 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic. The native of Alingsas, Sweden has skated in 28 games for the Blues this season, registering 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) along with 26 penalty minutes.

Cajanek, 30, will appear in his second Olympic Winter Games (2002) for the Czech Republic and has represented his country at four IIHF World Championships (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005) and the World Cup of Hockey 2004. He helped the Czech Republic capture gold medals at the 2000, 2001 and 2005 IIHF World Championships. The native of Gottwaldov, Czech Republic has skated in 50 games for St. Louis this season, ranking second in scoring with 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists).

Tkachuk, 33, was named to his fourth U.S. Olympic Team (1992, 1998, 2002 and 2006) and helped the United States win the silver medal at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. He last represented the U.S. at the World Cup of Hockey 2004, when he skated in five games and recorded six points (five goals, one assist), including a four-goal performance versus Russia. Tkachuk also served as an assistant captain at the inaugural World Cup of Hockey in 1996, when the U.S. captured the championship. A native of Melrose, Mass., he has recorded 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 16 games with the Blues this season.

In addition, Blues equipment manager Bert Godin will assist Easton and this will be his third time at the Winter Games.
