Binghamton Senators News Release


LAST WEEK: After 21 straight games without going into overtime, the Senators won a pair of games in the extra session last week. Binghamton went 2-1-0-0 but remains in sixth place in the East Division, two points behind the Philadelphia Phantoms.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8TH vs. PORTLAND (4-3 W ot): Binghamton trailed 3-0 after the Atlantic Divison-leading Portland Pirates scored only 19 seconds apart in the second period. But JEFF HEEREMA began a Binghamton comeback with at 14:54 of the middle period. Binghamton then scored a pair of third period goals, from wingers BRANDON BOCHENSKI and DANNY BOIS, to force overtime. BOCHENSKI also scored the game-winner almost midway through overtime to send the crowd of 4,287 home happy. BOCHENSKI contributed to all four goals in the comeback, tallying four points (two goals, two assists). BILLY THOMPSON stopped 36 of 39 shots in the win while Portland goalie NATHAN MARSTERS made 37 saves on 41 shots. Binghamton scored on one of four power-play opportunities while the Pirates converted on one of seven chances.

FRIDAY, FEB. 10TH @ SYRACUSE (0-2 L): BILLY THOMPSON stopped 33 of 35 shots, but the Senators could not find any offense as Syracuse won 2-0 on Friday night. Crunch goalie MIKE AYERS stopped all 35 shots he faced to earn first-star honors. Syracuse center MARK HARTIGAN, who had an 18-game scoring streak snapped on Tuesday, gave his team all the offense it would need with a power-play goal at 4:11 of the second period. Winger DARCY VEROT then scored his first goal of the season at 3:28 of the third period to give the Crunch some breathing room. Binghamton failed to convert on seven power-play chances while the Crunch scored once in six power-play tries. Despite being outshot 19 to nine in the opening twenty minutes, the Sens finished the game tied with the Crunch as each team took 35 shots.

SATURDAY, FEB. 11TH @ TORONTO (5-4 W ot): After DENIS HAMEL scored his 100th goal as a Binghamton Senator at 3:18 of the first period, Toronto took over and held a 4-1 lead late in the second. That is when BRANDON BOCHENSKI scored a power-play goal to cut the lead to two. BOCHENSKI then contributed to another three Senators goals as Binghamton rallied for the victory on JEFF HEEREMA'S overtime goal. Winger STEVE MARTINS was the hero of the third period as he scored twice in the last eight minutes, including the game-tying goal with only 36 seconds remaining and goaltender KELLY GUARD pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Binghamton outshot the Marlies 17 to six during regulation and overtime. KELLY GUARD stopped 21 of 25 shots while Marlies goaltender JEAN-SEBASTIEN AUBIN stopped 30 of 34 shots after relieving JEAN-FRANCOIS RACINE who played a little more than three minutes and stopped one of two shots.

THIS WEEK: Binghamton will play four games in five nights beginning on Wednesday with a game in Utica against the Syracuse Crunch. Following a brief trip to Rochester, the Senators will take on Philadelphia and Syracuse in back-to-back home games this weekend.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15TH vs. SYRACUSE (7:05 p.m.): AT UTICA, NY

The Crunch have not allowed a goal in seven periods of action after shutting out Binghamton on Friday and picking up a 6-0 victory against Rochester on Saturday. MIKE AYERS earned the shutout in both games and has won five straight starts overall. Since being recalled from loan to Dayton on Feb. 7, AYERS has won three games and allowed only one goal on 103 shots. Binghamton center CHARLIE STEPHENS (2 goals, 3 assists) and Syracuse center MARK HARTIGAN (1 goal, 4 assists) each have five points in the season series to lead all scorers. Each team has won twice in the season series.

FRIDAY, FEB. 17TH @ ROCHESTER (7:35 p.m.): Rochester defenseman NATHAN PAETSCH leads all scorers in the season series with 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in six games. Binghamton has won their last two games in Rochester, including a 6-3 win in their last appearance when winger GRANT POTULNY set a franchise record with four goals. Rochester had won five straight games before falling 6-0 to Syracuse on Saturday.

SATURDAY, FEB. 18TH vs. PHILADELPHIA (7:05 p.m.): Former Binghamton winger PAT KAVANAGH leads the series in scoring (4 goals + 4 assists = 8 points). Left winger TONY VOCE had four goals on Saturday as the Phantoms defeated the Chicago Wolves 6-1.

SUNDAY, FEB. 19TH vs. SYRACUSE (5:05 p.m.): Sunday's game will be Binghamton's last home game against the Crunch this season.

SENS SNIPPETS: The Utica Memorial Auditorium will host an AHL game on Wednesday for the first time since Dec. 28, 1996 when the Syracuse Crunch defeated the Binghamton Rangers 6-3. Binghamton and Syracuse will square off in Utica again this time. Tickets for the game remain available and may be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets for $20 with discounts available for B-Sens season ticket holders, groups, and youth under the age of 12...DENIS HAMEL scored his 100th goal as a Senator on Saturday and now has 17 power-play goals this season to tie the Sen's single season franchise record. He leads the league in power-play goals, two ahead of Toronto's JOHN POHL and Norfolk's NATHAN BARRETT...Nine of Binghamton's next 13 games are outside the East Division. Binghamton owns a record of 16-10-0-1 against non-East Division foes.
