CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars' losing streak reached four games Friday night in a 3-1 loss against the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the opener of a four-game series in front of 4,274 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Starter Trevor Cahill and reliever Derek Tharpe allowed only three hits, but early runs against Cahill and missed opportunities on offense cost the Cougars the game.

Cahill (3-3), who gave up three first-innings runs and lost in a quality start in his last outing, yielded two in the opening inning against the Kernels and one more in the fourth and lost in a quality performance. Two of the three runs he gave up came from leadoff walks, and the right-hander struck out seven. Tharpe posted a pair of 1-2-3 innings out of the bullpen.

Meanwhile the Cougars' offense had seven hits -- all singles -- and stranded six runners, managing just an unearned run in the seventh off Kelly Shearer, as Matt Smith singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Cedar Rapids starter Amalio Diaz (1-0) got the win, and Warner Madrigal saved his third game.

The Cougars (2-7), who haven't led in a game since their win last Monday, battled the Kernels (5-4) again Saturday night at 7 CDT when Scott Deal (4-5) faces Trevor Bell (2-2).
