Garcia, Gerbe, Ott to DL; Right handers Aponte and Marte Join 'Caps

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, announced today that infielder Louis Ott, RHP Jeff Gerbe and LHP Ramon Garcia are headed to the disabled list and RHP Eleazar Aponte and RHP Luis Marte will meet the 'Caps on their roadtrip in South Bend.
Ott moves to the DL after being injured during the bench-clearing brawl with Lansing on Thursday night. Ott hit .271 with two home runs, 16 RBIs and 24 runs scored in 43 games for the 'Caps and has been versatile this season by spending time at third, shortstop, second and catcher.
Garcia returned to the Whitecaps for the first time in over a year, but was taken out after two innings Thursday. The southpaw had surgery last offseason to repair a bone spur in his left shoulder. Gerbe missed his scheduled start on Wednesday with shoulder stiffness before being moved to the DL today. The Michigan native was 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA in 14 games with the Whitecaps this season.
Aponte returns to West Michigan after being transferred to the GCL Tigers on June 16. The right hander from Venezuela was 0-0 with a 7.88 ERA in a brief 8.1 innings for the 'Caps. Aponte started two games for the GCL Tigers in the past week, posting a 2-0 record and 1.50 ERA.
Marte also joins the Whitecaps from the Gulf Coast League after going 2-0 with 0.75 ERA in two starts after spending the first half of the season in extended spring training. The right hander from San Cristobal, D.R., had a remarkable year in 2006 with the Dominican Summer League Tigers, posting an 8-0 record with 1.38 ERA in 11 starts. Marte was signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on Nov. 16, 2005.
The Whitecaps active roster will be one player under the maximum at 24 players with four players on the disabled list.
