Midland, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts were able to plate several early runs against Clayton Kershaw, as they crushed the Great Lakes Loons 15-7 at Dow Diamond Friday night.

Lansing took the lead in the second inning when Kevin Nelson smacked a two-run double to center field to make it a 2-0 game. Nelson would come home when Jonathan Diaz reached on a throwing error by Great Lakes shortstop Adolfo Gonzalez. The run pushed the lead to 3-0.

Great Lakes put a run on the board in the third to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Lugnuts began to put the game out of reach in the fifth.

Kershaw unleashed three wild pitches in the inning, two of which allowed runs to score to make it a 5-1 game. Jonathan Jaspe's RBI single scored another run to extend the advantage to 6-1.

Zach Dials (4-4) made the most of the run support, as he tossed five solid innings and allowed just one run on four hits while picking up the win. It was the fourth straight start where he allowed one run or less.

Lansing poured it on in the late innings, plating nine runs in the final three frames to make it a 15-1 game. The runs were highlighted by an eighth inning Matt Liuzza two-run homer and a long two-run single in the ninth by Diaz that just missed being a grand slam.

Liuzza finished the game 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

Great Lakes did make it interesting by scoring six runs in the ninth, but they still fell eight runs short.

Kershaw (7-3) took the loss for the Loons, lasting just 4 1/3 innings while surrendering six runs on as many hits. Five of the runs were earned.

Lansing (39-39, 4-5) and Great Lakes (35-43, 1-7) will continue the series on Saturday night at Dow Diamond. Nate Starner (5-7, 5.28) will make the start for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by Arismendy Catillo (2-4, 5.48). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
