SOUTH BEND, IN - Matt O'Brien has made two starts for the Whitecaps since his return to the Midwest League at the All Star Break. He has thrown seven scoreless innings twice and in both games has led West Michigan to shutout victories, including 1-0 Friday in South Bend.

O'Brien scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out two to improve to 2-0.

West Michigan turned three double plays while South Bend turned two in four different innings.

The only Whitecaps run of the game occurred in the first inning thanks to three consecutive one-out hits from Scott Sizemore, James Skelton and Brennan Boesch who moved his team-leading total of RBI to 49.

Cesar Valdez pitched eight innings for South Bend but suffered the loss.
