Great Lakes Loons News Release

The Loons fell for the seventh time in their first eight games, losing to the Lansing Lugnuts 15-7 at Dow Diamond in front of 5,746 fans. The crowd was the largest in the short history of the ballpark, breaking the previous mark of 5,677 set on June 8 against Fort Wayne.

Matt Liuzza led the Lansing attack going 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Clayton Kershaw (7-3) picked up the loss, his third of the season.

The most interesting matchup of the night came in the ninth inning. Loons' reliever Yulkin German couldn't get out of the inning, allowing four runs in the frame and walking four batters. Without anyone warming up in the bullpen, Loons manager Lance Parrish brought on right fielder James Peterson to pitch to one of the best hitters in the Midwest League in Travis Snider. With a full count, Peterson got Snider to fly out to left fielder Matt Berezay, who threw out the runner Jonathan Diaz in a rundown between third and home. It was the first time a Loons position player has came into pitch in a game in team history.

The Loons seemed energized as they followed the double play with a six-run bottom half highlighted by a Tommy Giles two-run triple. Peterson then recorded the final out of the ballgame, grounding out to shortstop. Before the six-run ninth inning for the Loons, the team had scored six runs in their last seven games.

Kershaw had a very uncharacteristic performance, pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing six runs and throwing three wild pitches (all in the same inning).

Zach Dials started for the Lugnuts and pitched five innings allowing only a run while striking out five. He picked up the win and evened his record to 4-4. Ben Harrison pitched three innings without allowing a run in the ballgame. Ted Serro pitched a scoreless ninth for the Lugnuts.

The Loons fall to 1-7 in the second half of play in the Midwest League season, already four games out of a potential playoff spot. The Lugnuts improve to 4-5.

The Loons will take on these Lansing Lugnuts again on Saturday night where it is Viva Las Vegas Night at Dow Diamond. You just might spot Elvis, Frank or even Marilyn Monroe in the stands. Be sure to stay after the game for fireworks powered by Dow Corning.. Game time is set for 7:05 pm. The game is already sold out. Tickets still remain for the Loons' final two games of the series - Sunday and Monday - by calling 989-837-BALL or by visiting Loons.com.
