Pina Pitches Chiefs Past Bees

Peoria, IL (June 29, 2007) - Jose Pina pitched a season-high seven shutout innings to lead the Peoria Chiefs (5-4, 36-42) to a 7-1 victory over the Burlington Bees (6-3, 36-42) at O'Brien Field tonight. Tonight's loss ends the Bees' streak of three straight wins overall and six in a row against the Chiefs this season. The Bees still lead the season series 6-3.

Pina (2-7) allowed just one hit and two walks in the first five innings. The hit came by Jase Turner as he lined one off the wall in left to lead off the third, but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. The Bees best threat came in the sixth. With one out, Derrick Robinson singled and Kurt Mertins doubled to put two men in scoring position, but Pina caught Jeff Bianchi looking at strike three and got Michael Thompson to ground out to end the inning.

The Chiefs started the scoring against Bees' starter Josh Cribb (1-7) in the third. Jonathon Mota led off with a single and with one out, Josh Lansford launched a two-run home run to left. It was Lansford's third home run of the season and his second against the Bees. The Chiefs extended the lead in the fourth. With runners at second and third and two outs, Jim Adduci doubled to the wall in left-center for two RBI and the Chiefs led 4-0. Cribb came out after five innings and Ed Cegarra finished the final three. The Chiefs added two unearned runs in the seventh. Mertins made two errors at shortstop, a bunt single by Adduci, and a passed ball led to the runs. Matt Camp added the final run in the eighth with a two-out solo home run to right for his second homer of the season.

The Bees avoided being shutout by scoring a fun in the ninth against Alex Maestri. With one out, Joe Dickerson doubled to right-center field, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a bloop single by Matt Morizio. The run and two hits were the first for the Bees against Maestri in four appearances this season.

The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:30 at O'Brien Field. LH Everett Teaford (3-7, 5.54) will start for the Bees against RH Marco Carrillo (1-3, 5.02) for Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
