Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities received their first member of the 2007 draft class on Friday, as power-hitting Steven Hill, a 13th-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this month, was transferred from Batavia to Quad Cities.
The 22-year-old out of Stephen F. Austin State University was tearing the cover off the ball with the New-York Penn League's Batavia Muckdogs, hitting .429 with five doubles, one homer, and eight runs driven in during his first nine professional ballgames.
Capable of playing both first base and catcher, Hill was drafted following a decorated senior season at Stephen F. Austin in which he hit .385 and slugged .819, checking in third in the nation with 24 homers while adding 73 RBI, 71 runs scored, and 16 doubles. That was good enough to garner Southland Conference Player of the Year honors as well as a spot on the 1st-Team Louisville Slugger All-American squad.
Hill spent just two collegiate seasons with the Lumberjacks, yet left the school as its all-time leader in home runs (38), RBI (117), hits (157), doubles (32), and triples (6).
The native of Houston, Texas, also spent two seasons in Junior College, playing for San Jacinto Junior College as a freshman in 2004 and Eastfield Junior College in 2005. Hill slugged 31 home runs during his sophomore season at Eastfield, earning Metro Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
