
Chiefs Beat Bees 7-1

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs climbed to within a game of first place Burlington with a 7-1 victory over the visiting Bees at O'Brien Field Friday night. The win brings the Chiefs to 5-4 in the second half and 36-42 overall.
Jose Pina tossed seven shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season. Pina had his best start of the season allowing just four hits while striking two. Alex Maestri worked the final two innings and allowed the only Burlington run.
The Chiefs were able to break through against Bees starter Josh Cribb in the third inning. Jonathon Mota singled to start the inning and Josh Lansford connected on his third home run of the season to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
Peoria got back to work on offense in the fourth after Wellington Castillo and Matt Camp both singled. Camp moved to second on a throw to give the Chiefs runners on second and third with one out. With two outs, Jim Adduci doubled off the wall in left center to score Castillo and Camp to give the Chiefs a 4-0 advantage.
Burlington managed just one hit in the first five innings off Pina. However, in the sixth inning after Derrick Robinson singled and Kurt Mertins doubled to give the Bees with runners on second and third with one out. Pina bounced back to strike out Jeff Bianchi and got the MWL leader in home runs Michael Thompson to ground out to keep Burlington off the board.
The Chiefs struck against the Bees bullpen in the seventh inning off Ed Cegarra. Mota reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and Adduci reached on a single. Both runners moved up on a passed ball to make it second and third with no outs. Lansford reached on the second error of the inning by Burlington to score Mota and Adduci to make it 6-0.
Matt Camp hit a solo home run, his second of the season with two outs in the eighth inning to give the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage. The Bees broke up the shutout in the ninth inning after Joe Dickerson doubled to right center field and came around to score on an RBI single by Matt Morizio to make it 7-1.

Jose Pina (SP) - Jose worked seven shutout innings, his best start of the season to earn his second win. This was the first start this year in which Pina has not allowed a run. He also struck out two batters in the contest.
Notes...Pina was the second different Chiefs pitcher to work into the seventh inning this season...The seven innings pitched is a career high for Pina and longest this season by a Chiefs starter...Peoria starters have not allowed a run in 21 2/3 innings...Castillo extended his hitting streak to five games...The crowd of 5,293 was the largest non-sell out crowd of the season...It is also the 5th largest crowd this season...The Chiefs and Bees continue the series on Saturday evening at 6:30...Following the game will be another spectacular fireworks show courtesy of Miller Lite...The Chiefs will send RH Marco Carrillo (1-3, 5.02) to the hill against LH Everett Teaford (3-7, 5.54)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
