February 11, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release
The Americans fell 6-3 in a battle of special teams against the Portland Winterhawks tonight at the Toyota Center.
All three of Tri-City's goals were scored on the power play. The Americans have the best power play in the league at 30.0% (63/210) and have been even better at home with 36.6% (37/ 101).
Marcus Nguyen opened scoring 7:55 into the game to give the Winterhawks the initial lead.
Tyson Greenway tied the game for the Americans 14:44 into the period as he tapped home a rebound off an odd man rush on the power play.
Tri-City out shot Portland 14-13 through the first 20 minutes.
With Elouann Lemonnier in the box for rough, James Stefan scored a power play goal for the Winterhawks to put them back in front early in the second period. Aidan Litke followed with a goal, extending Portland's lead to 3-1.
The Ams continued to fight back and capitalized on another power play opportunity 12:14 into the middle frame. Rookie forward Jordan Gavin picked up a rebound in the low slot and scored short side on Winterhawks netminder Dante Giannuzzi. Gavin, selected second overall by Tri-City in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, leads all 2006-born players with 15 goals and 25 assists through 43 games this season.
A tripping penalty from Diego Buttazzoni quickly gave the Ams another man-advantage. Portland was able to overcome Tri-City's top-ranked power play and net a shorthanded goal from Nguyen, the eventual game-winning goal.
Portland led shots 15-11 in the middle period and carried a 4-2 lead into the third.
Ethan Ernst put Tri-City back within one early into the final period as he scored on a power play with a one-timer from the right circle. Ernst leads the Ams with 12 power play goals this season.
Portland added a goal from Gabe Klassen on the power play and a final goal from Ryder Thompson to finish with a 6-3 victory.
Tomas Suchanek played the full game in net for the Ams and turned aside 42 of 48 shots faced.
The Ams will be back at the Toyota Center tomorrow as they take on the Red Deer Rebels for Fred Meyer Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
