Chiefs' Offense Stymied as Everett Takes the First of Back-to-Back Matchups, 2-1

February 11, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash - The Chiefs faced off against the Everett Silvertips tonight for the first of back-to-back matchups between the two squads. Despite another impressive 34-save performance from Spokane netminder Dawson Cowan, the Chiefs fell to the Silvertips 2-1 including one goal scored in each period of play.

Everett broke through early with a goal just 2:59 into the first period on their very first shot on goal. Ben Hemmerling found the net for the 18th time this season, off an assist from Kaden Hammell. This was Hammell's 8th assist after coming over to the Silvertips from Kamloops earlier this season.

The rest of the first was choppy with numerous shots, stops, and skirmishes, but no further goals. Berkly Catton was penalized twice for Spokane in the first period while Everett's Tsakumis served a tripping minor towards the end of the frame.

Jackson Berezowski found the net for Everett shortly into the second period at 4:10. It was a controversial goal as play seemed to freeze for a moment before the puck was poked over line. After review the goal was called good and play would resume. It was Berezowski's 34th of the season and second consecutive game on the goal sheet. Ben Hemmerling registered his second point of the night with an assist, and Austin Roest added an assist on the play as well.

The Chiefs entered the third frame scoreless and began to push for a comeback. Spokane survived an early penalty to Mac Gross before finally breaking through at 12:01 of the period. Weinstein took a pass from Wiles and drove down the left slot towards the crease before centering to Cade Hayes who fired it home on his second attempt to claw one back.

The Chiefs continued pushing for an equalizer over the final eight minutes of the game. Spokane called a late timeout and pulled Dawson Cowan from his post with roughly 1:47 left in the period, granting the Chiefs an extra attacker. Everett looped the puck down the ice, narrowly missing an insurance goal, resulting in a late icing. The Chiefs were unable to take advantage of the attacking zone face-off with the clock slowly ticking down, and the game finished in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Spokane was unlucky to only score one goal on the night after hitting the post and peppering the Everett net 35 times during the game. Cowan was awarded the third star of the night for Spokane after stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced. Both teams were exhausted after this one, after many lengthy periods of play with limited stoppages. Revenge will be on the mind for Spokane as they face-off against the Silvertips tomorrow night in Everett for a rematch.
