Oil Kings Downed in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a 7-1 decision to the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday night in their final game of a five-game road trip.

The ICE jumped out to a commanding first period lead scoring fives time in the opening 20 minutes.

After Conor Geekie scored less than a minute into the game on a hard slot shot, the next wave of offence wouldn't come until latter half of the frame when the ICE scored four times in a 6:04 segment with Owen Pederson tallying twice along with singles from Connor McClennon and Carson Lambos.

In the second period, the Oil Kings were able to generate 13 shots on the Winnipeg net, resulting in a number of dangerous scoring chances, but they were unable to breakthrough on ICE netminder Mason Beaupit.

Meanwhile, in the Oil Kings' crease, Kolby Hay took over in the second period from Logan Cunningham and stopped all 17 shots he faced as Winnipeg maintained the 5-0 lead through 40.

In the third period, the Oil Kings would finally solve Beaupit after Dawson Seitz hacked a puck to the side of the Winnipeg net it was picked up and elevated over the sprawled Winnipeg goaltender by Mason Finley for his ninth goal of the season.

The ICE would respond quickly with a pair of goals of their own from Zach Benson and Matthew Savoie to further their lead ahead of the final horn.

Hay and Cunningham finished the night making 34 saves for the Oil Kings, while Beaupit earned the victory with a 26-save performance. Edmonton went 1-for-4 on the power play, Winnipeg was 0-for-2.

Next up, the Oil Kings return home on Saturday, February 18 when they welcome the Calgary Hitmen to Rogers Place at 7:00 p.m.
