The Story:
Marcus Nguyen tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Winterhawks (36-10-2-2) to a 6-3 win over the Tri-City Americans (25-19-4-1) in Kennewick, Wash. on Friday night. Portland now boasts points in three consecutive games (2-0-0-1).
Dante Giannuzzi stopped 33 of 36 shots to seal the win in his 100th game for the Winterhawks.
For the third straight game in the season series, Nguyen opened the scoring in the first period as he rifled a shot from the right circle at 7:55 of the frame. Tri-City responded with Tyson Greenway's power-play goal before the end of the first, but two more Portland tallies early in the second pushed the Hawks ahead. James Stefan potted the first, wiring a top-shelf shot from the left circle on the power play at 3:35. Five minutes later, Aidan Litke capped off a rush with Nguyen and Carter Sotheran with a tidy tuck from close range to make it 3-1.
Once again the Americans pushed back on Jordan Gavin's 15th of the year at 12:14 of the second - also on the power play - but the Hawks responded in kind on Nguyen's second of the night two minutes later to restore their two-goal lead. Tri-City's Ethan Ernst narrowed the gap to one goal yet again in the third period, but Portland continued to show its mettle and buried a pair to put the game to bed. Gabe Klassen managed to bounce a puck off an Americans defender for the first, followed soon after by Ryder Thompson firing a shot off several bodies and in to wrap up a 6-3 win for the Hawks.
The Winterhawks are back in action tomorrow night for Black Hockey History Night at the VMC against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Puck drop is set for 6:00 P.M. between the two clubs atop the Western Conference.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"It's good to get on the score sheet, but it's also fun winning because we're trying to get back on a roll. We have a huge road trip coming up and a big rivalry game tomorrow. I hear it's a big crowd and it's going to be loud and we're excited for that."
Winterhawks forward Marcus Nguyen
