Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY (July 15, 2003) – The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the American Hockey League has released its schedule format for the 2003-04 season.

The Crunch will play 44 games against their North Division foes (Rochester 12, Cleveland 8, St. John's 8, Hamilton 6, Toronto 6 and Manitoba 4). Syracuse also has 10 contests against the West Division (Chicago 2, Cincinnati 2, Houston 2, Milwaukee 2 and San Antonio 2). In addition, the Crunch will face-off against the East Division 26 times (Binghamton 8, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 8, Albany 4, Hershey 4 and Philadelphia 2). Syracuse will not face any team in the Atlantic Division during the regular season.

The Board of Governors approved the 1,120-game schedule format for the 2003-04 season, based on the new four-division alignment that was announced last week. Each of the AHL's 28 teams will play an unbalanced 80-game schedule, including 40 home dates and 40 road dates and featuring traditional and regional rivalries. The regular season will begin on Wednesday, October 8, and concludes on Sunday, April 11.

The league's governors also amended AHL Rule #51 (Delaying the Game), eliminating the automatic minor penalty for shooting a puck out of the playing surface in the defensive zone. The rule still calls for a delay of game penalty on any player who deliberately shoots or bats the puck outside the playing area.
