SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League's annual meeting of the Board of Governors concluded on Thursday night on Hilton Head Island, S.C., with several announcements.

The board approved the 1,120-game schedule format for the 2003-04 regular season, based on the new four-division alignment that was announced last week. Each of the AHL's 28 teams will play an unbalanced 80-game schedule, including 40 home dates and 40 road dates and featuring traditional and regional rivalries. The regular season will begin on Wed., Oct. 8, and conclude on Sun., Apr. 11.

The frequency of games between opponents can be found in the accompanying grid. The entire 2003-04 schedule is expected to be announced early next month.

The league's governors also amended AHL Rule #51 (Delaying the Game), eliminating the automatic minor penalty for shooting a puck out of the playing surface in the defensive zone. The rule still calls for a delay of game penalty on any player who deliberately shoots or bats the puck outside the playing area.

And earlier in the week, the AHL's Board of Governors approved the transfer of controlling interest in the Houston Aeros franchise from Chuck Watson to Minnesota Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Aeros' parent club, the NHL's Minnesota Wild. Last month, the Aeros captured their first American Hockey League championship with a victory in the Calder Cup 2003 Finals.
