Capitals Trade Farrell To Nashville For Riazantsev

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Alexander Riazantsev from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Pirates' right wing Mike Farrell, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced on Monday.

Riazantsev, 23, split the 2002-03 season between Hershey and Milwaukee of the American Hockey League, combining for eight goals and 14 assists in 71 games. The 6' 0", 210-pound Moscow native was acquired by Nashville from Colorado on March 11 in exchange for a seventh-round choice in the 2003 Entry Draft.

Originally selected by the Avalanche 167th overall in the 1998 Entry Draft, Riazantsev has yet to appear in an NHL game. In parts of five seasons in the AHL with Hershey and Milwaukee, he has recorded 18 goals and 51 assists for 69 points in 216 games.

Farrell, 24, appeared in four games for the Capitals and 68 games for the Pirates, recording 12 goals and 12 assists, during the 2002-03 season. Originally selected by the Capitals 220th overall in the 1998 Entry Draft, Farrell has appeared in a total of 12 NHL games, all with Washington.
