Capitals Resign Defensemen Fortin, Hajt

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, today re-signed defensemen J-F Fortin and Chris Hajt to one-year contracts, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced. In keeping with club policy, the financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Last season Fortin, 24, appeared in 33 games for the Capitals, recording an assist, and 10 games for the Pirates, scoring two goals and an assist. The 6' 2", 205-pound native of Laval, Que., was originally drafted by the Capitals in the second round, 35th overall, in the 1997 Entry Draft. In parts of two seasons with the Capitals in 2001-02 and 2002-03, Fortin has played in 69 games, posting one goal and four assists.

Hajt, 25, appeared in 71 games for the Pirates last season, recording 11 goals and 15 assists, ranking second among team defensemen in points (26). The 6' 3", 206-pound Saskatchewan native signed with the Capitals as a free agent on July 23, 2002. Originally drafted by Edmonton 32nd overall in the 1996 Entry Draft, Hajt appeared in one game for the Oilers during the 2000-01 season.
