Norfolk Admirals News Release
ALLENTOWN, Penn. - The Norfolk Admirals were not able to overcome the Lehigh Valley Phantoms' three goals in three minutes during the second period and were defeated on Saturday night at the PPL Center, 4-3.
It took just 1:06 for the scoring to get started. Norfolk goaltender Yann Danis, making his seventh straight start in net, stopped Lehigh Valley's initial shot but couldn't find Austin Fyten's rebound through traffic. Jason Akeson and Steven Delisle assisted on the opening marker, which was the quickest first goal scored on the Admirals this year.
Norfolk did not lose face, however, and while on the power play from Akeson's slashing penalty, William Karlsson notched his first goal of the season at 13:38. Max Friberg recorded his fourth point since returning from injury with a nice pass from behind the goal line that hit Karlsson in front of the net. The two teams skated into the first intermission knotted at one.
Although Norfolk was not able to capitalize on a man-advantage early in the second period, just 12 seconds after the power play expired, Joseph Cramarossa gave the Admirals their first lead of the game. Phantoms goaltender Anthony Stolarz went behind the net to play the puck but mishandled it, and Cramarossa wasted no time in executing a wraparound glove-side. John Kurtz and Brandon Yip registered the assists at 6:49 of the second period.
The advantage didn't last long. Less than five minutes after Cramarossa's goal, former Admiral Blair Jones wristed the puck from the blue line, which bounced off Norfolk defenseman Jared Nightingale. Taylor Leier and Brandon Manning earned the assists at 11:25 of the period to tie the game at two.
The Phantoms' offense didn't let up, and the hosts scored two more over the next 2:57 while on the 5-on-3, with Jones and Manning contributing on each. Leier scored his first of the game at 13:33, accepting a cross-ice pass from Jones and popping the puck over Danis' head where it trickled into the net. Jones notched his second of the night as he blasted a shot from the left circle at 14:22 to extend the Phantoms' lead to 4-2.
Less than six minutes into the third period, Karlsson struck again. Brendan Bell sent a pass from the left circle across the slot which landed on Karlsson's stick. Stolarz couldn't slide across in time, and the puck slid into the net to cut the Phantoms' lead to one. Despite pulling Danis in the dying minutes of the game, Norfolk wasn't able to bounce back and fell to Lehigh Valley, 4-3.
Stolarz saved 35 of 38 shots, while Danis stopped 25 of 29.
Lehigh Valley went 2-for-8 on the power play, and Norfolk went 1-for-5.
The Admirals continue their road trip next week for a Tuesday evening game at 7:00 p.m. in Charlotte, followed by a three-in-three at Springfield and Manchester.
