Syracuse Crunch News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - A three-goal third period carried the Syracuse Crunch (11-7-3-0) over the Hershey Bears (10-8-1-1), 4-1, tonight at Giant Center.
With the game tied and two minutes gone by in the final frame, Cody Kunyk scored his third and fourth goals of the season to put the Crunch on top. Kunyk has four goals and seven points.
Joey Mormina, playing in his first game since Oct. 18, made his presence felt with just over six minutes gone by in the game. Mormina's initial shot from the point was stopped by Hershey goalie Philipp Grubauer and collected by Yanni Gourde. Philippe Paradis converted on a quick pass from Gourde to give the Crunch a 1-0 lead, his fifth goal in three games.
Late in the second, 17 seconds into a Tanner Richard roughing penalty, Hershey tied the game when a Stanislav Galiev rocket beat Andrei Vasilevskiy on the blocker side. Connor Carrick, who made a cross-ice pass, and Tim Kennedy were credited with assists on the power-play goal. The Bears were 1-for-6 on the man advantage.
Kunyk opened the third period by regaining the lead for Syracuse after Joel Vermin forced a turnover in front of the Bears net. The marker was Kunyk's first since Nov. 1 against Binghamton.
The next goal from Kunyk was a power-play score, following up on a Joey Mormina shot from the neutral zone. Kunyk split two Hershey defenders to track down the rebound, surprised Grubauer and snuck his fourth goal of the year inside the right post. The two-assist performance is Mormina's third multi-point performance with Syracuse.
Jonathan Marchessault's empty-net goal, assisted by Gourde, solidified the victory for Syracuse. Marchessault and Gourde are tied for the team lead with 19 points.
Vasilevskiy picked up his fifth win, stopping 28 of 29 Hershey shots. Grubauer was handed his fifth loss, his second against Syracuse.
The Crunch return to the War Memorial Arena to face the Hartford Wolf Pack Dec. 5.
