November 29, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Despite a three-goal first period and 41 saves from Sami Aittokallio, the Lake Erie Monsters (6-8-2-2) fell 4-3 in overtime on the road to the Hamilton Bulldogs (9-9-2-0) Saturday night in Hamilton, Ontario. Reid Petryk and Michael Schumacher each registered a goal and an assist, while Troy Bourke scored a shorthanded goal for the Monsters. With the loss, the Monsters earn a point in the standings. The overtime defeat comes a night after the Monsters topped Hamilton 4-2 at Quicken Loans Arena. The Monsters are back on the ice to finish their three-game weekend Sunday in Toronto at 5:00 p.m.
Reid Petryk opened the scoring for the Monsters with his first professional goal at 2:44 of the first period. Michael Schumacher's centering pass deflected into the net off the skate of Petryk, but after replay review, the goal was deemed legal, and the Monsters took a 1-0 lead. Just over four minutes later at the 6:56 mark, Troy Bourke took the puck from the neutral zone after a Hamilton turnover, danced around multiple Bulldogs defenders, and finished his rush with a deke to his backhand to beat Bulldogs goalie Joey MacDonald for his second goal of the season. Bourke's goal was shorthanded, and was unassisted.
Christian Thomas scored a power play goal for Hamilton from the top of the left circle at 7:58 of the first period to cut the Monsters lead to 2-1, but with six minutes remaining in the period, Michael Schumacher regained the two-goal edge for the Monsters. After taking a drop pass from Petryk at the top of the right circle, Schumacher sent a slap shot past MacDonald for his third goal of the season to put the Monsters on top 3-1. Stefan Elliott also assisted on the goal.
With 15.7 seconds left in the first period, Hamilton's Jacob de la Rose scored to pull the Bulldogs to within 3-2.
After a scoreless second period in which Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio turned away 12 shots, Hamilton tied the game at 3-3 in the third period. Following a Monsters turnover, Daniel Carr scored from the top of the goal crease at 9:15 of the final period for the Bulldogs, and the goal ultimately forced overtime.
Hamilton secured the win on their fifth shot of the extra frame, as the American Hockey League's rookie scoring leader Charles Hudon rifled a one-timer from the right circle past Aittokallio to give Hamilton the 4-3 victory with 1:09 left in the seven-minute overtime period. Hudon's game-winning tally was Hamilton's second power play goal of the game.
Aittokallio stopped 41 of 45 Bulldogs shots, and his record moves to 3-1-1 on the season. MacDonald stopped 19 of 22 shots in the Hamilton net, and he improved to 4-4-1 on the season.
The Monsters visit Toronto Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern to conclude their three-games-in-three-days weekend. Tomorrow's game airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer.
