Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons defeated the Manchester Monarchs, 4-1, tonight at the MassMutual Center to tie the franchise's longest winning streak of nine consecutive games.

The victory snaps Manchester's nine-game point streak and maintains Springfield's position atop the Northeast Division and Eastern Conference with 31 points. The Falcons move to 15-7-1-0 on the season and sit at 1-1-0-0 in the four-game season series against the Monarchs. The Monarchs are now 13-5-1-0 on the season and are second behind the Falcons in the Eastern Conference with 27 points.

Falcons goaltender Anton Forsberg picked up his eighth straight win, turning aside 21 of 22 shots. Monarchs goaltender Jean-Francois Berube stopped 18 of 22 in defeat. Springfield was unable to convert on their one power play opportunity. The penalty kill unit stopped one of two Manchester man-advantages.

The Falcons opened scoring at the 11:46 mark of the first frame and carried their 1-0 lead into the intermission. Corey Cowick forced a turnover at the left boards and fired an unassisted shot from the left circle that rung off the post and behind Berube.

Springfield lit the lamp three more times in the second period before getting a response from Manchester. Domenic Monardo increased the Falcons lead just 21 seconds in to the frame. Alexander Wennberg notched his first point with the Falcons when he set Monardo up from behind the net. Monardo picked up Wennberg's pass and cut across the crease to beat Berube at the right post. Marko Dano also earned a point for the secondary assist.

Sean Collins tallied his ninth goal of the season at the 8:10 mark to put Springfield up, 3-0. T.J. Tynan brought the puck around the back of the cage and passed off to Ryan Craig in the right corner. Craig pushed a feed along the goal line to Collins, who was positioned in front of the crease.

The Falcons further extended their lead a minute later. Forsberg made the save on a Monarchs shot that was picked up by Monardo. He skated the puck down the ice to create a two on one breakaway and netted his second of the game from the right wing circle.

The Monarchs got on the board at the tail end of a double minor penalty on Wennberg for high-sticking. With 1:30 remaining in the period, Jeff Schultz sent a feed to Colin Miller for a one-timer from the left point. David Van der Gulik earned credit for the secondary assist.

An even third period sealed a 4-1 victory for the Falcons.
