Admirals win over Wolf Pack

Norfolk, VA - Paul Szczechura's goal at 3:50 of overtime gave the Norfolk Admirals a 3-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night at Norfolk Scope.
Szczechura deflected a Matt Lashoff shot past Wolf Pack goaltender Matt Zaba, after Norfolk won an offensive-zone faceoff. The Admirals had tied the game at two with only 3:05 remaining in regulation, on a goal by Justin Keller, who also assisted on the winner.
Zaba made 37 stops in the game, and the Wolf Pack got goals from Corey Locke and Kenny Roche, as well as two assists from defenseman Jared Nightingale. Szczechura had an assist for Norfolk in addition to his game-winning goal, and Jaroslav Janus made 29 saves in the Admiral net.
After a scoreless first period in which the Wolf Pack outshot Norfolk 14-7, Hartford opened the scoring at the 52-second mark of the second period on a shorthanded goal by Locke.
Locke carried the puck down right wing into the Admiral zone and flipped it backhanded toward Dane Byers on the left side. Norfolk defenseman Ty Wishart blocked the pass, but in doing so unintentionally deflected it into his own net.
The Admiral power play evened the score at 11:56, as Mitch Fadden snapped a shot from the right faceoff dot under the crossbar behind Zaba.
Roche gave the Wolf Pack a 2-1 lead at 8:45 of the third period, with his second goal in six games with the Wolf Pack. Roche broke down left wing and drove a slap shot past Janus, just after Zaba had made a sparkling save on Juraj Simek.
Keller's tying goal came just 10 seconds after a Norfolk power play expired, with Keller deflecting in a shot by Ryan McGinnis.
The result ran the Wolf Pack's record to 24-20-3-4 for 55 points and kept them two points ahead of Bridgeport for fifth place in the Atlantic Division. The Wolf Pack and Admirals battle again on Saturday night at Scope, with faceoff at 7:15 PM.
