Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - In a back-and-forth affair at Fluor Field on Tuesday night, David Renfroe singled home Josue Peley in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Greenville Drive (29-30) to a walk-off victory over the Lexington Legends (28-31). It was the first walk-off win of the season for the Drive, and gave them the 2-1 series victory over the Legends.
For the third consecutive night, Lexington struck first with three runs in the top of the second. Chris Wallace led off the inning with a solo homer to left off Drive starter Keith Couch. Later in the frame, Tyler Burnett and Jhonny Medrano hit back-to-back singles. They were driven in on a triple to left by Ben Orloff.
Couch settled in nicely after that, retiring the next nine batters he faced. He received a no-decision, allowing just those three runs in six innings of work.
Greenville answered back in the bottom of the third with a barrage of singles to tie the game. Peley singled to start the inning and scored on a single by Renfroe. After two outs were made, Miles Head knocked a single to left to bring in Renfroe. After another single by Brandon Jacobs, Drew Hedman smacked the Drive's fifth single of the inning, scoring Head and evening things up.
Both teams scored a run apiece in the seventh. With Garrett Rau now on the mound for the Drive, Orloff dropped down a bunt single with one out. Jordan Scott followed him up with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Orloff from first base. The Drive scored an unearned run in the bottom half when Peley was hit by a pitch, was balked to second, stole third and scored when Wallace's throw skipped into left field.
The winning rally started in the bottom of the ninth when Scott misplayed Henry Ramos' line drive into a two-base error. After Peley grounded out to move Ramos up ninety feet, Renfroe singled past a drawn-in infield.
Drive reliever Justin Erasmus (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance with the team after throwing a scoreless ninth. Jorge DeLeon (1-2) took the loss for the Legends.
Scott and Orloff each had three hits for Lexington, with Orloff driving in two runs. Wallace added two hits, including the solo homer. Head, Hedman, Jacobs, Peley, and Renfroe all recorded two-hit games for Greenville.
Following an off day on Wednesday, the Drive begin a 7-game road trip in Rome, GA, for a three-game series against the Braves. Right-hander Brandon Workman (1-4, 4.01 ERA) will toe the rubber in the opener for Greenville, while Rome counters with right-hander Aaron Northcraft (2-1, 2.82 ERA).
Although the Drive do not return home to Fluor Field until June 16th, their homefield will feature the Upstate's top high school talent on Wednesday with the Greenville County High School All-Star Game. First pitch is set for 7 PM, with all tickets just $6.
