Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Trenton, New Jersey- Two first-inning errors turned into a pair of runs and the Trenton Thunder beat the Portland Sea Dogs 3-1 Friday night. The Sea Dogs missed out on a handful of opportunities the rest of the game, going just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Alex Wilson (4-3) recorded his third quality start of the season, but was tagged with his third loss of the season. Wilson matched his last start where he tallied a season-high seven strikeouts.
Wilson struggled in the early stages of the game. Thunder leadoff man Austin Krum reached in the first inning on an error by first baseman Jon Hee. Then, Corban Joseph singled and Austin Romine walked to load the bases. Wilson battled back to strike out the next two batters and nearly got out of the inning unscathed. The next batter, Melky Mesa, sent a ground ball near Oscar Tejeda. The second baseman couldn't make the play, however, allowing two runs to score. Trenton's third run of the game came in on a wild pitch by Wilson in the second inning.
Ryan Lavarnway cut the lead to two after a two-out RBI single in the top of the third inning, scoring Chih-Hsien Chiang. Portland worked its way into a few other scoring opportunities, but couldn't come up with the big hit. Dellin Betances (3-1) walked back-to-back hitters with one out in the fourth inning. Then, the Yankee prospect got a fielder's choice from Chiang and a groundout from Vladimir Frias to end the threat.
Che-Hsuan Lin led the way offensively for the Sea Dogs. The center fielder went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk. He also grounded into a fielder's choice with Frias on first for the final out of the game. Josh Schmidt worked two scoreless innings for his second save of the season. After battling through the first two innings, Wilson and Kyle Fernandes combined to retire seventeen straight batters at one point, and only allowed one runner after the second inning.
The Sea Dogs and Thunder play the second of their three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. After that Portland returns to Hadlock Field for its longest homestand of the year, nine games in eight days. May 24th will be Bark in the Park night. Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks will be on hand as well that night, performing for the crowd between innings. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
