Zapolski Powers Stingrays Past Solar Bears 3-1

Orlando, FL - Goaltender Ryan Zapolski made 42 saves to help lead the South Carolina Stingrays (27-23-2-3) past the Orlando Solar Bears (23-25-2-3) 3-1 at the Amway Center Saturday evening.

Defenseman Cam Brodie kicked off the scoring and put the Stingrays up 1-0 early in the first period slipping a shot between the legs of Solar Bears goaltender Patrick Killeen (L, 24 saves on 27 shots) from the bottom of the left-wing circle at 5:31. Forwards Alex MacLeod and Phil Mangan added assists.

Forward Andrew Cherniwan gave the Stingrays at two-goal lead on the power play at the 10:00 mark of the second period knocking in a rebound off a shot from the point from defenseman Derek Foam . Mangan picked up the second assist.

In the third period, defenseman Luka Vidmar made it 3-0 on the man advantage with his fourth goal of the season blasting a shot from the point through a screen and past the blocker of Killeen with help from forwards Robby Dee and Hunter Bishop . With the assist, Bishop extends his point streak to five games (three goals, four assists). The Solar Bears grabbed a late-period tally from defenseman Jesse Dudas at 15:43 to wrap up the game scoring. The Stingrays ended the contest 2-for-9 on the power play while the Solar Bears went 0-for-6.

Before the contest, forward Alden Hirschfeld was reassigned to the Stingrays from the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. In 17 games with the Stingrays this season, Hirschfeld has four goals and four assists for eight points.

The Stingrays wrap up the regular-season series with the Solar Bears tomorrow, Sunday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the Amway Center and return to the Coliseum on Friday, February 22 for the Dog Days of Winter against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. Bring your dog to the game!
