Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, PA - The Elmira Jackals were unable to finish off a three game sweep of the Reading Royals as they fell by a 4-3 score at the Sovereign Center on Saturday night. The loss dipped Elmira's record to 27-20-4.
After scoring first in each of the prior two meetings with Reading this week the Jackals found themselves down by a pair midway through the first. Yannick Tifu gave Reading the early lead with a slap shot from the slot with 9:46 gone by. Elmira was looking to tie the game on the power play a few minutes later, but the Royals used a turnover to create a 2-on-1 and T.J. Syner fed Ian O'Connor for the shorthanded strike. Elmira answered back with a power play goal from Jean Bourbeau with 1:45 left in the first to pull the Jackals back within one. Maxime Clermont stopped four of the six shots he saw in the first while Reading's Sergey Kostenko denied 10 of 11.
Jordan Pietrus, who had scored a goal in each of his last three games, knotted the game with a spinning wrist shot before the second period was a minute old. He took a pass from Kyle Bushee low on the right wing, whirled to his right and put the shot perfectly under the cross bar for his 13th goal of the season. That was the only strike of the period, and the Jackals worked hard to ensure that. The Royals had nearly six consecutive minutes of power play time near the midpoint of the period but the Jackals killed it all off. Clermont stopped each of the nine shots he faced
The game was completely up for grabs in the third, and lately Elmira had owned the Royals in the final frame. The goal advantage was 10-2 in Elmira's favor in the last four meetings combined. But tonight the Royals picked up markers from Ian O'Connor at 6:54 and a power play strike from Stanislav Galiev at 9:13 to go back up by a pair. The Jackals refused to go away and grabbed their third goal of the night with just under five minutes remaining. Kevin Harvey took a shot from the left appeared to be deflected in front by Pietrus and he was awarded his 14th goal of the season. The Jackals had a couple of strong chances in the waning moments with Clermont pulled for the extra attacker, but couldn't find the tying goal.
Clermont stopped 19 shots in taking the loss. Elmira ended the night 1-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
