TONIGHT'S MATCH-UP
LHP Foster Griffin (0-3, 6.44) vs. RHP Alex McRae (4-6, 4.11)
Griffin: Gave up two runs on three hits over 3.0 IP with 4 BB and 2 K on 7/15 @ DEL (11-3 'Birds)
McRae: Surrendered three runs on seven hits over 4.1 IP and walked three in 7/15-1 L vs. HAG (3-2 Suns)
THE LEAD OFF: The trio of John Sever, Julio Vivas, and Dovydas Neverauskas combined to shutout the Lexington Legends 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Sever worked four innings and struck out five and was replaced by Vivas in the fifth, who tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first career South Atlantic League win. Neverauskas pitched the final two innings. Offensively, the Power scored all the runs between the second and fourth innings. Chase Simpson hit an RBI single in the second to give the Power the first run of the game. Michael Suchy added an RBI double in the third and Elvis Escobar drove in the final run of the game with a single in the fourth.
MUSTACHED WARRIORS: The Power conclude the homestand with the final game against the Lexington Legends tonight. The Power are 9-2 against Lexington this year and hold a 106-97 record all-time against them. The two teams will meet again twice in late August. The first time runs from August 17-19 in Lexington. The Legends will return to Charleston from August 19 to September 2.
SU"CHY" TO THE GAME: West Virginia right fielder Michael Suchy added two more RBIs in yesterday's victory and leads the team with 45 RBIs. This month alone, Suchy is hitting .288 with a team-best 16 RBIs. Since June 1, Suchy is hitting .315 with four home runs and 28 RBIs.
COMING THRU IN THE CLUTCH: West Virginia went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position in yesterday's win against the Legends and are 16-for-33 in this series against Lexington. In the three-game series with Hagerstown, the Power went 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
BROOMS ARE OUT: Tonight the Power can finish off the Legends with a four-game series sweep. If West Virginia gets the win tonight it will mark the first time this season the Power have swept a team in a four-game series and the first since they swept the Legends at the end of the 2013 regular season. Earlier this year, the Power swept Delmarva in a five-game series.
HOTTER WITH THE WEATHER: Among all teams in the South Atlantic League, the Power hold the best record (12-6) in July. The Power are hitting .269 as a team while the pitching staff owns a league-best 2.37 ERA this month. The batting average ranks second behind only Asheville (.284). Hickory has the next-best ERA at 2.99 in July.
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP: Since moving to the bullpen in early May, Power reliever Dovydas Neverauskas has flourished. The Lithuania native owns a 1.50 ERA in ten games including two shutout innings on Sunday afternoon. In his two years as a starter with the Power, Neverauskas owned a 5.85 ERA. In 24 innings as a reliever, Neverauskas has walked just two batters compared to 15 walks over 18.1 innings as a starter.
PROMO UPDATE - JULY 30: West Virginia will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future with a theme night dedicated to the film and series. Fans can enjoy a postgame concert by Mighty McFly as part of the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and the players will be wearing Back to the Future-themed jerseys to be auctioned off with all proceeds to benefit the research of Parkinson's Disease.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia's 60 sacrifice bunts this season are the most in affiliated baseball...The Power are 18-15 against the Southern Division this season...Tito Polo finished the Pan-Am Games 3-for-17 with one home run as the Colombian National Team finished 0-5...Tonight's starter Alex McRae leads the club with seven quality starts.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Jeff Locke provided the lone run for Pittsburgh in the 6-1 loss to Milwaukee...Indianapolis twice blew a save in the ten-inning, 3-2, loss to Toledo. Radhames Liz worked six shutout innings...Max Moroff went 3-for-5 to bump his average to .326 in Altoona's 6-3 loss to Richmond...Montana DuRapau suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering a walkoff to Palm Beach in Bradenton's 3-2 loss...Logan Hill went 3-for-5 in the Black Bears' 8-5 win at Auburn.
