Hagerstown Suns News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Hagerstown Suns (12-13, 47-46) couldn't score after the second inning on Monday afternoon, as they lost their series-finale against the Kannapolis Intimidators (13-12, 48-46) by a final of 3-2. Kannapolis claimed the series win three games to one, giving the Intimidators the 7-4 edge in the season series with eight games remaining against each other this year.
On Monday Hagerstown took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a two-run homerun off the bat of LF Jeff Gardner. However, the Intimidators responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, and then Kannapolis wound up taking the lead for good in the fourth when 2B Ethan Gross smacked a line drive single to right to drive in 3B John Ziznewski from third. That run was charged to Suns starting RHP Luis Reyes (4-6), who as a result took the loss. He threw five innings, giving up the three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. Starting RHP Thad Lowry (10-5) earned the win for Kannapolis. He pitched seven innings, surrendering two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. RHP Matt Cooper threw the final two frames for Kannapolis for his ninth save of the year.
In the third game of the series on Sunday evening the Suns plated at least one run in all but three innings en route to a 9-4 win. Hagerstown collected 14 hits in the victory, including five extra-base hits. The longest hit was a solo shot by 3B David Masters, which came with one out in the eighth and put the Suns ahead 7-1. Starting RHP Brian Rauh went just four innings in his 2015 Suns debut, so it was LHP David Napoli (4-3) who got the win for Hagerstown in relief. He threw two scoreless innings and allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three. Starting RHP Yelmison Peralta (3-8) suffered the loss for Kannapolis. He allowed four earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out just one over four frames.
In game two of the series on Saturday evening the Suns got shutout for the 10th time this season and the second time on this road trip as they fell 1-0. Hagerstown was limited to just two hits, as three Kannapolis pitchers combined to complete the Intimidator's league-leading 12th shutout thrown this season. RHP Zach Thompson (3-4) got the start and win for Kannapolis, tossing six innings and surrendering just one hit and three walks while striking out four. RHP Jacob Morris gave up one hit over two frames for his fifth hold of the season, while RHP David Trexler struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save of the year. Starting RHP Drew Van Orden (5-3) wound up with the hard-luck loss for Hagerstown. He went four innings, giving up one earned run on six hits and four walks while striking out two.
In the first game of the series on Friday night the Suns couldn't muster any offense until the eighth inning as they fell 5-2. The Intimidators got most of their offense in the second, when Ziznewski drove in four runs with one swing of the bat. His grand slam was the first homerun he has hit this season. Starting RHP Jose Morales (0-2) gave up all five Kannapolis runs on six hits and two walks over four innings while striking out three as he got tagged with the loss. Starting RHP Yency Almonte (7-4) earned the win for Kannapolis. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out three. Cooper threw the ninth for his first save of the series and eighth of the season for the Intimidators.
In total Hagerstown and Kannapolis each scored 13 runs apiece in the series, but the Intimidators outhit the Suns 31-25. The Suns began their seven-game road trip by winning two of three games in West Virginia against the Power, so Hagerstown finished its trip with a 3-4 record. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to take on the Savannah Sand Gnats (8-14, 47-45) in a three-game series beginning on Wednesday, July 22. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05pm.
