Asheville Tourists News Release
GREENVILLE, SC-- If one was to say the Asheville Tourists bullpen has been overworked as of late, it would be a giant understatement. The 'pen needed a day of rest and starting pitcher Carlos Polanco gave them a front row seat the entire night. The San Pedro de Macoris native spun nine innings on Monday night to lead the Tourists to a 3-2 win over the Greenville Drive.
Polanco was touched up for a pair of doubles in the bottom of the first inning that put the Drive in font 1-0. Asheville had trouble putting a rally together against Greenville's starter Jake Drehoff despite hitting the ball hard. In the fifth inning, the home team scraped across another run against Polanco to make it 2-0.
The Tourists offense broke through in the sixth. Max George led off the inning with a double and two batters later Dom Nunez tied the game with a Home Run to right. Asheville added two more hits in the inning but could not capture the lead.
In the top of the eighth Nunez recorded a one-out single. He took second on a passed ball and scored when Drew Weeks hit a ball past Yoan Moncada into centerfield. Weeks' at-bat lasted around 15 pitches before he plated the go-ahead run.
Asheville stuck with Polanco who had retired 12 in a row prior to a ninth inning infield single by Javier Guerra. A caught stealing quickly erased the single and two batters later Polanco struck out Danny Mars to end the game. The right-hander finished with seven strikeouts.
The Tourists concluded their road trip 5-2 with series victories over the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Drive. Following Tuesday's off day, Asheville will welcome the Hickory Crawdads to McCormick Field. Wednesday's game is scheduled for 7:05pm.
