Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds rallied in the ninth inning on Monday night, stealing the finale from the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 3-2. Delmarva (14-11, 47-46) scored three runs for the comeback win, walking off on Elier Leyva's sacrifice fly.
Greensboro starter Tyler Kolek dominated the early stages of Monday's series finale. The Marlins' top prospect only allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and it did not come until the fifth inning on a swinging bunt by Oswill Lartiguez. Delmarva's best chance off Kolek was after a leadoff walk and stolen base by Ademar Rifaela, but the Shorebirds' centerfielder was stranded on third base in the first inning.
The Grasshoppers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, initially loading the bases with two walks and a single off Shorebirds' starter Dariel Delgado. Ryan Aper hit a sharp grounder to third base, and Derek Peterson threw home for the second out. Catcher Yermin Mercedes then sailed a relay throw over Logan Uxa at first base, attempting to turn a double play. The throwing error allowed two runs to score as the ball zipped down the right field line.
With Kolek spinning a gem, Delmarva waited to take advantage of Greensboro's bullpen. The Shorebirds missed a rally chance in the seventh inning as a called third strike left two runners on. In the ninth, closer Sam Alvis walked the first two batters to spark the rally. Mercedes belted a two-run triple to right-center, tying the game at 2-2. Leyva lifted a fly ball to center, scoring Mercedes for the winning run when the throw skipped away from the catcher.
Garrett Cortright earned the win for Delmarva with two perfect innings in relief. Mike Burke pitched three scoreless frames in relief, keeping the deficit at a manageable two runs. Alvis took the loss in the blown save for Greensboro.
Delmarva has now won seven of their last nine games, and the Shorebirds have won all four home series of the second half. The Shorebirds head out of the road for a Southern swing to Charleston and Augusta. Josh Walker (4-2, 3.32) starts Wednesday for Delmarva against the RiverDogs' right-hander Jordan Foley (3-3, 3.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.
