Wranglers Fall to Salmon Kings 3-2 in a shootout

Victoria, BC - The Las Vegas Wranglers (29-10-13, 71 points) were defeated by the Victoria Salmon Kings (24-30-1, 49 points) 3-2 in a shootout at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre on Friday night. Victoria's Julien Ellis made 31 saves and stopped three of four in the shootout to lead the Kings over Las Vegas. The Wranglers, who dropped to 3-7 in shootouts this season, received a season-high 40 saves from goalie Kevin Nastiuk. Forwards Tyler Mosienko and Joe Tallari each scored in the regulation as Las Vegas dropped their league-high 13th overtime/ shootout loss of the season. Centers Kiel McLeod and F.P. Guenette each scored in regulation for Victoria. Las Vegas remains in Victoria for the final game of a three-game set on Saturday at 7:05 pm.

In the first period, Victoria scored the only goal of the opening period at 16:54. Center F.P Guenette redirected a pass from Marc-Andre Bernier for his 11th goal of the season with just under three-minutes to go in the period. Guenette tipped the pass over the right shoulder of Kevin Nastiuk, for the 1-0 lead after one period of play.

After a scoreless second period, Las Vegas scored twice in the first four minutes of the third period to take a 2-1 lead. First, Joe Tallari scored his eighth goal of the season at 1:16 to tie the game 1-1. Defensemen Bryce Thoma and Mike McBain each snapped long scoreless droughts with an assist on the goal. Thoma dished out his first assists of the season, snapping a 38-game drought, McBain picked up his first point in his last 20 games. The Wranglers took a one-goal lead just over three-minutes later as Tyler Mosienko scored his 15th goal of the season at 4:17. The lead only lasted 1:32 as Salmon Kings' captain Kiel McLeod scored his 24th of the season to tie the game 2-2.

Both teams were held off the scoreboard in overtime, leading to a shootout. Victoria's Milan Gajic and Wes Goldie each scored on the first two Salmon Kings' shots as the Wranglers were held off the board. Facing elimination in the fourth round, Mosienko netted a shootout goal to keep the Wranglers alive, but Ryan wade sealed the win with a shootout tally in the fifth round for the victory.

Las Vegas will return home on Tuesday, February 27th to host Idaho at 7:05 pm. After a game in Phoenix on Thursday, March 1st, the Wranglers will host the Roadrunners at 7:05 pm on Friday March 2nd and Saturday, March 3rd. The first 2,000 fans to the game on Friday March 2nd receive a Wranglers Pint Glass, compliments of Integrity Jeep Chrysler Dodge. Also, fans may attend the Port of Subs Pre-Game Party from 4:30 - 6:30 pm in the concourse of the Orleans Arena on Saturday, March 3rd.
