Bakersfield Condors News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Bakersfield Condors worked overtime for the second time in three games, but again come out on the short end, falling to the Phoenix Roadrunners 3-2, Friday night, in front of 6,575 at U.S. Airways Center.
On a power-play opportunity in the extra session, Todd Jackson took a pass at the side of the Condors net and slid the puck home for the game-winner at 3:09.
The teams played a scoreless first period, but both had good chances. Phoenix (24-25-4, 52 points) had a short-handed breakaway midway through the stanza, but Rejean Beauchemin, playing his first game in goal since joining the team on Tuesday, stopped the opportunity with the left pad.
Bakersfield (30-13-8, 68 points) nearly took the lead late in the session when Kevin St. Jacques had an opportunity on the doorstep, but Cody Rudkowsky denied him from point-blank range.
The Condors took the lead at 6:32 of the second, when Josh Liebenow came in on a short-handed breakaway, deked Rudkowsky to the ice and slid the puck past him to make it 1-0. It was his 22nd of the season, tying him with Brett Lutes for the team lead.
But on that same power-play, the Roadrunners tied it up, as Jeff Kyrzakos netted his fifth of the year at 7:24.
Bakersfield again went out in front at 15:56, when Rane Carnegie kept the puck in the Phoenix zone, and Todd Griffith came down the slot and beat Rudkowsky high to the glove side for his 21st of the year.
But once again Phoenix responded, as Dusty Demaniuk rifled a shot past Beauchemin to knot the game at 2-2 at 17:22.
Despite three power-play chances and 14 shots on goal in the third, the Condors couldn't break the deadlock.
Notes: Scott Borders was activated and played for the first time since breaking his femur in Game 7 of last season's Pacific Division Finals. Mark Malone, acquired earlier in the week from Wheeling, played his first game on defense for Bakersfield.
Kevin Asselin was activated from the 3-day injured list. Lutes was placed on the 3-day IR and Alex Rogosheske was put on the 7-day IR.
Bakersfield returns home Saturday, Feb. 24 for a re-match against the RoadRunners, and it's KGET-TV 17, The Big 96.5 KBKO & McDonald's Youth Jersey Giveaway night, with the first 2,000 children, 12-and- under, receiving a replica jersey of Condors defenseman Reagan Leslie.
