February 23, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (33-16-2) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end as the Gwinnett Gladiators (30-17-6) picked up a 4-2 win on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,544.
After a scoreless first period, the Gladiators, who snapped their three-game losing skid, tallied the game's first goal just 25 seconds into the second period. Brad Schell notched his 23rd goal of the season launching a one-time shot from just inside the blue line that found it's way under the cross bar for the 1-0 lead. The Everblades however stormed back with a pair of goals separated by 1:11. At the 3:17 mark Adam Taylor increased his point scoring streak to seven by tallying a power play goal from the top of the crease. Brad Zancanaro and Brad Parsons assisted on Taylor's 15th goal of the year. The Everblades briefly grabbed the lead when Derek Damon beat Gwinnett goaltender Dan Turple with a back hand shot from the right circle at 4:28 on assists from Zancanaro and Frank MacDonald.
The lead however was short lived as the Gladiators tied the game less than two minutes later when Blue Bennefield deflected Jamie Milam's point shot past Everblades net minder Craig Kowalski at 6:27. Gwinnett scored the go ahead goal late in the second period when Matt York tipped home a power play goal at 14:50 off a Jon Awe shot from the right point.
Leading 3-2 entering the third period, Gwinnett added some insurance when Chad Painchaud's shot from the high slot beat Kowalski over the glove and snuck just inside the right post. The goal was initially waived off by the referee but after conferring with the goal judge allowed the goal to stand. Joel Stepp notched the lone assist on Painchaud's 17th goal of the season.
Kowalski (20-9-1) saw his personal four-game win streak come to an end after allowing the four goals on 18 shots, while Turple increased his record to 15-9-3 after stopping 36 of 38 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out the night 1-for-6, while the Gladiators finished the game 2-for-4.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, return to the ice on Saturday, February 24 when they host the Augusta Lynx at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
