Worcester's Six-Game Win Streak Snapped in Series Finale

Worcester Red Sox News Release

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Worcester Red Sox (54-47) fell for the first time this week to the Buffalo Bisons (57-41), a 9-5 defeat at Sahlen Field on Sunday afternoon.

For the first time in the series, Buffalo pushed across the opening run of the game. After the WooSox loaded the bases and failed to score in the top of the first, the Bisons put a runner on second with one out versus Alex Claudio, who got the start after Raynel Espinal was scratched late. Tyler White cracked a single to center moments later to put the home team on top 1-0 after one.

Worcester, which averaged more than six runs per game over the first six games, put up another crooked number in the top of the second inning. Working against Buffalo starter Nick Allgeyer, Connor Wong came to the plate with the bases full and doubled deep to left center. The ball banged off the base of the wall, giving Wong a three-run triple to put the road team on top for the first time. Worcester kept the extra-base hits rolling-by inning's end, both Joey Meneses and Josh Ockimey had ripped RBI doubles, and the WooSox extended the lead to 5-1.

From there, the Bisons' offense took over, scoring in the third, sixth and seventh on the way to the victory.

In the bottom of the third, Richard Ureña delivered a two-run double and Cullen Large added an RBI single. Those two swings chased Claudio, who tossed 2.2 innings and allowed eight hits. The right-hander threw 50 pitches, the most for Claudio in an outing since May 2, 2017.

After Durbin Feltman put up 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, Eduard Bazardo entered in the sixth. White greeted him by crushing a two-run home run to left-center, putting the home team back on top 6-5. Bazardo bared down after that, striking out two over one inning in his first Triple-A appearance since May 18, part of an MLB rehab assignment.

A Kellin Degland three-run home run in the seventh put the game out of reach, a no-doubt shot to right-center off Jose Adames to make it 9-5, the final score.

Sunday's game marked the final matchup of the season between the teams, a season series that saw Worcester win 15 of the 24 games.

The WooSox are off Monday and begin a six-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. Radio coverage starts live at 6:45 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. On the mound, Worcester's Kyle Hart (5-7, 4.39) is scheduled to face Ben Braymer (6-7, 5.57).
