St. Paul Saints News Release

TOLEDO, OH - It was the game that would never end and apparently it won't until Sunday. The St. Paul Saints and Toledo Mud Hens sat through an hour rain delay to begin the game and then played nearly five hours before play was halted at 1:00 a.m. due to curfew with the game tied at nine in the top of the 14th. Major League Baseball rules say that a full inning can't start after 12:50 a.m.

With the Saints up 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Spencer Torkelson hit a solo homer to right-center, his second of the season, tying the game at eight.

Neither team scored in the 10th or 11th and the Saints finally scored the placed runner in the 12th. With one out, JT Riddle bounced a single through the left side to score the placed runner, Ben Rortvedt, giving the Saints a 9-8 lead.

In the bottom of the inning the Saints were one out from winning it. With Jacoby Jones the placed runner at second, Jovani Moran, working his third inning of relief, walked Kody Clemens. Moran then fanned the next two hitters. Grayson Greiner hit a soft liner to the right of the shortstop Riddle, who had the ball go into his glove, but as his momentum took him to the ground the ball squirted out for an infield single that loaded the bases. Moran then walked Jacob Robson to force in the tying run. Robinson Leyer came on in relief and struck out Ryan Kreidler to end the inning.

For the first time in the series the Saints jumped out on top and utilized the first inning to do so. Jose Miranda led off the game with a single to center. With one out, Tomás Telis' infield single to third put runners at first and second. With two outs Gilberto Celestino singled to center scoring Miranda and the fielding error by Riley Greene advanced Telis to third as the Saints took a 1-0 lead. Rortvedt followed with an RBI single to center putting the Saints up 2-0.

The Mud Hens tied it in the second when Drew Strotman walked the first two hitters of the inning. With one out, Christin Stewart roped a two-run double to the gap in right-center tying the game at two.

The Saints put up a crooked number in the top of the third as they plated five while sending 10 men to the plate. BJ Boyd led off with a single to center. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Mark Contreras to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. Contreras stole second and Celestino reached on an infield single at short putting runners at first and third. With two outs Jimmy Kerrigan walked to load the bases. Drew Maggi made it 5-2 with a two-run single to center. After a walk to Sherman Johnson loaded the bases, Miranda hit a ground rule double to center plating two that gave the Saints a 7-2 lead.

The comfortable lead didn't last long as the Mud Hens answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Strotman walked the first two hitters he faced and then a single by Isaac Paredes loaded the bases. Kody Clemens' fielder's choice plated a run to make it 7-3. Aderlin Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to right to make it 7-4 as he advanced to second on a throwing error by the right fielder Jimmy Kerrigan. A wild pitch scored Clemens and a sacrifice fly from Greiner got the Mud Hens within one at 7-6. Strotman went 2.2 innings allowing six runs on three hits while walking a career high six and striking out two.

The Saints took advantage of a Mud Hens miscue in the fifth to add to their lead. Kerrigan led off with an infield single to third. Maggi then punched a single through the right side. With Kerrigan on his way to third, the right fielder Stewart bobbled the ball allowing Kerrigan to race around and score giving the Saints an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth Greiner led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Jacob Robson. A fielder's choice by Niko Goodrum put runners at the corners and Spencer Torkelson made it 8-7 with a sacrifice fly to center.

The two teams will resume the game in the top of the 14th inning at 1:05 p.m. central. The regular scheduled game will begin 30 minutes at the conclusion of the suspended game and will be nine innings. The Saints send RHP Beau Burrows (2-2, 4.66) to the mound while the Mud Hens are TBA. Both games can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
