Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians held off the Louisville Bats after a back and forth battle to win 7-6 and secure the series split on Sunday afternoon.
The Indians (48-53) took the lead first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, James Marvel earned Indy's first hit of the day with a single to right field. Tucupita Marcano and Phillip Evans hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for Hoy Park who singled to left field to score Marvel and Marcano to put the Indians on the board. Bligh Madris knocked in one more run with a single to right-center field to put Indy on top 3-0.
With no outs in the top of the fourth inning, the Bats (41-60) hit four straight singles and a sacrifice fly to score two runs and put themselves within striking distance at 3-2.
The one run difference did not last long as Louisville scored three with a three-run home run from Michael De Leon in the top of the fifth frame to take the 5-3 lead.
With runners on second and third, Park hit a sacrifice fly to center field to chip away at the Bats lead with one run in the bottom of the fifth. An inning later in the sixth frame, Indy retook the lead when Evans hit a two RBI single to right-center field to give Indy the 6-5 lead.
Indy tacked on one more insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI single from Fabricio Macias. That insurance run proved important when the Bats scored one in the top of the eighth inning to finish the game at 7-6.
Shelby Miller (W, 2-1) entered in the sixth inning and earned the win after throwing one scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Shea Spitzbarth (S, 1) picked up his first save of the season after shutting down the Louisville offense in the top of the ninth with two strikeouts. R.J. Alaniz (L, 1-2) took the loss for the Bats giving up two runs on two hits in one inning of relief.
The Indians will continue their 12-game homestand on Tuesday vs. the Iowa Cubs with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. Starting pitchers for both teams have yet to be named.
