WooSox Rally for Five in Third, Even Series with 5-3 Win Over Mets

September 15, 2023 - International League (IL)
Worcester Red Sox News Release

WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (37-29, 76-65) stopped a two-game skid with a win over the Syracuse Mets (24-40, 57-81), a 5-3 victory in front of 9,508 on the final Friday night game of the year at Polar Park.

All five of the WooSox runs and hits came in the bottom of the third inning, a frame in which they sent 10 batters to the plate. Corey Rosier doubled and David Hamilton single to begin the threat, and after Hamilton stole second, Nick Sogard gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a base hit of his own.

A walk to Enmanuel Valdez put two on, followed by a Bobby Dalbec double down the left field line that scored Sogard and Valdez. After a flyout, Narciso Crook delivered an RBI two-bagger of his own, capping off the five-run rally.

Hamilton stole his International League-leading 56th base in the frame, while Valdez' base-on-balls was part of a three-walk night for the 24-year-old.

That was more than enough for Worcester starter Brian Van Belle, who earned his fifth Triple-A win thanks to the following line: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K. The right-hander allowed only a first-inning RBI single to Abraham Almonte and a fifth-inning solo homer from Jaylen Palmer.

After allowing three straight hits with one out in the first, Van Belle retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced.

In his fourth Triple-A appearance, WooSox reliever Luis Guerrero gave up a solo homer to Michael Perez in the seventh. Justin Garza and Logan Gillaspie tossed runless eighths and ninths, respectively; Gillaspie earned his first Red Sox organizational save with a 1-2-3 closing inning.

The WooSox continue their final homestand of the 2023 season, Super Duper Fan Appreciation Week, at Polar Park on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. against the Syracuse Mets, affiliate of the New York Mets. On the mound, Corey Kluber (0-1, 4.76) is set to make a rehab start, facing Justin Jarvis (0-6, 9.00). Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
