Louisville Bats News Release
DURHAM, NC -- Christian Roa earned his first career Triple-A win while Alejo Lopez tallied another three-hit night at the plate as the Louisville Bats (71-69) shutout the Durham Bulls (83-59) 2-0 on Friday night.
Both sides were held in check early. The Bats finally broke through in the top of the fifth when Jacob Hurtubise sparked a two-out rally with a hustle single to the right side of the infield. A walk to Reds rehabber Stuart Fairchild and a Durham error would put two men in scoring position with two outs for Alejo Lopez, who came through with an RBI single that brought both runs in to score and give the Bats a 2-0 lead.
Louisville right-hander Christian Roa (1-4, 5.66) dazzled in his start, earning his first win. Roa turned in 5.0 shutout innings, surrendering just two hits and five walks while striking out a new professional career-high twelve batters. Roa's twelve strikeouts also marks a new team-high mark for strikeouts in a single game.
The Bulls wouldn't go quietly in the ninth as they put a pair of runners in scoring position, but Tony Santillion (1-2, 7.98) was able to work around the danger and earn the save in the Bats 2-0 victory.
Four relievers in Kevin Herget (2-3, 4.78), Casey Legumina (2-1, 4.71), Tony Santillan (1-2, 7.98) and Reds rehabber Alex Young (0-0, 0.00) combined to finish out the shutout, recording nine strikeouts. In total, Bats' pitching combined for a season-high 21 strikeouts on the night. The win is also just the second shutout victory for the club this season.
The series in Durham will continue with game five on Saturday, September 16 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. First pitch set for 6:35 pm E.T. Righty Michael Mariot (4-3, 6.59) will take the hill for the Bats while southpaw Josh Fleming (0-1, 5.19) will go for the Bulls.
