Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Despite allowing a late home run, the Iowa Cubs (77-62) beat the St. Paul Saints (80-61) by a score of 7-6, Friday at Principal Park.

Matt Mervis used an RBI single in the first inning to put Iowa ahead 1-0, but St. Paul immediately tied the game on an RBI double from Kyle Garlick and took a lead on two bases loaded walks. Trailing 3-1, Yonathan Perlaza made it a one-run game, clubbing a solo home run.

Ben Brown and Cam Sanders combined to throw four perfect innings of relief, striking out five of the 12 batters they faced. This allowed Iowa to come back in the sixth, getting a two-run single from Chase Strumpf to take a 4-3 lead.

Later that inning, Perlaza hit his second home run of the game, this time a three-run blast to extend Iowa's lead to 7-3. They maintained their four-run lead with scoreless outings from major league rehabbers Brandon Hughes and Nick Burdi.

Trevor Larnach crushed a three-run home run in the ninth to make it a one-run game, but Tyler Duffey worked around it to earn Iowa their third straight win.
