Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (30-21) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (34-14) split a two-game slate at Polar Park on Thursday, a 6-2 WooSox victory in game one and a 1-0 RailRiders win in a rain-shortened game two.
Game one began at 4:05 p.m., a continuation of Wednesday's suspended affair. Worcester led 2-0 in the top of the third inning entering the day, but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got one back quickly on a Hoy Park homer to center to make it a one-run game.
The WooSox scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh to take a stranglehold on the game: a sac-fly by Jack Lopez in the fifth, a Marcus Wilson two-run home run in the sixth and a Chris Herrmann solo shot to close the Worcester scoring in the seventh. The RailRiders managed one more run behind an Andrew Velazquez RBI single, but Kaleb Ort closed the win with a scoreless ninth.
Raynel Espinal grabbed the win, starting the day by entering in relief and tossing five innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts. The right-hander has now won seven straight decisions, a streak that began on May 16-Espinal's seven wins on the season also leads Triple-A East.
Played largely in a steady downpour, a rain-shortened game two saw a nightcap dominated by the pitchers. In five innings, the two teams combined for one total run and 13 strikeouts. The game's lone run came in the third, when Estevan Florial singled, stole second and scored on a Socrates Brito RBI knock up the middle.
Worcester had the tying run in scoring position in the fourth and fifth, but SWB's Trevor Lane managed two innings of scoreless relief. After Lane struck out Jarren Duran to end the fifth, the game entered a rain delay shortly before 9 p.m. and was ultimately declared an official game, a 1-0 RailRiders' win.
The WooSox continue the six-game series Friday at Polar Park versus the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders at 6:35 p.m. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 6:15 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. On the mound, Worcester's Kyle Hart (3-4, 4.94) faces Matt Krook (0-0, 1.42).
