Louisville Bats News Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jose Barrero capped off late-inning heroics with a sacrifice fly as the Louisville Bats (19-30) secured a 2-1 extra-innings win over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday night at First Horizon Park.

Nashville wasted no time scoring the game's first run in the home half of the first. Tim Lopes led off the frame by lining the first pitch for a hit to left field before Louisville starter Michael Mariot induced a double play to clear the base path. With two down, Cooper Hummel and Zach Green registered back-to-back doubles to put the Sounds ahead, 1-0.

These runs were the lone blemishes in an otherwise impressive outing for Mariot. He would settle in to retire 15 of the next 19 batters, notching his second quality start of the season despite taking a no-decision. The right-hander scattered five hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings of one-run ball. He has now recorded 33 strikeouts with two walks in 15 career appearances against Nashville.

The two teams went scoreless over the next six innings before the Bats broke into the scoring column on a wild pitch from Patrick Weigel. After Logan Morrison and Alfredo Rodriguez drew two straight walks to lead off the scoring sequence, Beau Taylor executed a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners and place the tying run 90 feet away. It looked like Nashville shattered any hope of a late-inning rally with a fielder choice play to get Morrison at the plate, but Rodriguez would advance to third before coming around to tie the game on the next offering from Weigel.

Braden Shipley punched out two batters and induced a groundout to earn his first save of the season.

Louisville will now hand the ball to RHP Riley O'Brien (2-3, 5.40) to face off with Nashville's RHP Alec Bettinger (1-2, 3.00) on Thursday. First pitch from First Horizon Park is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
