Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk showed a lot of power Thursday night at Charlotte, hitting three home runs and held off a late comeback attempt in a 7-6 victory. It was their fifth game with at least three home runs this season.

Charlotte got on the board first with a solo home run by Luis González to lead off the bottom of the second inning. They would go up 2-0 in the third inning after Matt Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Williams.

Norfolk responded in the top of the fourth with three runs on two home runs to take a 3-2 lead. Tyler Nevin led the inning off with a home run, his 10th of the season. Seth Mejias-Brean would later hit a two-run home run that also scored Yusniel Díaz, who singled two batters earlier.

Starter Mickey Jannis would set down Charlotte 1-2-3 to end the fourth, which was his final inning due to a rainstorm that blew through and caused a rain delay. Jannis allowed two runs on four hits (one home run) and two walks while matching a season-high four strikeouts.

The game resumed at 9:15 p.m., and with one out Zach Jarrett picked up where the Tides left off by hitting a solo home run and extended the lead to 4-2. Jarrett has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games (since June 18), where he's batting .306 (11-for-36) with three doubles, three home runs, six RBI and six walks.

Charlotte stayed in it with by scoring another run in the fifth, with Reynolds getting his second RBI of the night on an RBI single that scored Tim Beckham. The Tides were able to score again in the sixth when Mason McCoy hit an RBI single to score Mejias-Brean, who reached on a two-base error. Charlotte would then respond again with a solo home run by Mikie Mahtook in the bottom-half, trailing the Norfolk 5-4.

Mejias-Brean would record two more RBI on a two-run single in the top of the seventh to extend Norfolk's lead to 7-4. He finished 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs.

Fernando Abad entered the game in the ninth to close it out but gave up three straight hits and gave up a run. Dusten Knight relieved him with runners on second and third with no outs, and allowed one inherited runner to score on a groundout but struck two others to earn his third save of the season, as the Tides won, 7-6. Knight is tied for the team lead in saves and is riding an 11.0 inning scoreless streak.

Game four-of-six starts tomorrow night at 7:04 p.m. in Charlotte, with RHP Kyle Bradish (1-1, 4.32) pitching for Norfolk while RHP Jimmy Lambert (1-0, 4.26) will start for the Knights.
