Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split a rain-shortened quasi-doubleheader with the Worcester Red Sox on Thursday night at Polar Park. Worcester took the resumption of Wednesday's game by a 6-2 final, while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre won the regularly-scheduled game 1-0 in a rain-shortened, five-inning contest.
When Wednesday's game resumed, the Red Sox held a 2-0 lead after scoring once in the first on a Chris Herrmann RBI single and adding a run in the second on a fielding error. The RailRiders changed that in the top of the third when Hoy Park launched a solo home run to center off Raynel Espinal.
Deivi Garcia was on the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when the game resumed and turned in a solid outing. He allowed three runs on six hits in four innings, striking out seven and not issuing a walk. Braden Bristo allowed a home run to Chris Hermann in the seventh to extend the gap to 6-1.
The RailRiders added a run in the eighth on an Andrew Velazquez RBI single, but couldn't muster anything else, falling 6-2.
SWB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a Socrates Brito base hit. Reggie McClain got a spot start in the nightcap for the RailRiders and turned in three hitless innings to open the game.
After McClain, Trevor Lane pitched the next two frames, escaping a first-and-third jam in the fifth to strand the tying run in scoring position. Following Lane's strikeout of Jarren Duran to end the fifth, the tarp was called for with rain falling. After a 47-minute delay, the game was called.
It was the first 1-0 win for the RailRiders since April 22, 2017 at Indianapolis. SWB pitchers allowed just two hits in the game, completing the team's second two-hitter of the week, having already tossed a nine-inning two-hitter on Sunday at Lehigh Valley.
The RailRiders continue their series with the WooSox on Friday night. First pitch at Polar Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning on the RailRiders Baseball Network at 6:15 p.m. LHP Matt Krook (0-0, 1.42) takes the ball for SWB against LHP Kyle Hart (3-4, 4.94) for Worcester.
The RailRiders return home to PNC Field on Tuesday, July 7 to begin a series with the Syracuse Mets. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
