Wolves Roster Gets A Sterling Addition
November 5, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
The Atlanta Thrashers have reassigned 2006-07 American Hockey League Rookie of the Year BRETT STERLING to the Chicago Wolves. In addition, Atlanta has reassigned defenseman SCOTT LEHMAN (LAY-MAN) from the ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators to Chicago.
STERLING made his National Hockey League debut this season, posting three points (G, 2A) - which includes his first career NHL goal on Oct. 20 - and 12 penalty minutes in 10 outings with the Thrashers.
Last year, the 23-year-old left wing was named the winner of the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding rookie after pacing the league with 55 goals - the most by a Wolves player in eight years and the fourth-highest total in franchise history - and ranking fourth overall with 97 points in 77 outings. Just the fifth first-year pro in league history to crack the 50-goal mark, STERLING was awarded the Willie Marshall Award as the AHL's top goal scorer, and was named to the 2006-07 AHL First All-Star Team and AHL All-Rookie Team.
The Los Angeles native also led the AHL with 21 power-play goals and was named MVP of the 2007 AHL All-Star Game. He earned back-to-back AHL Rookie of the Month honors in November and December and was awarded the AHL Milestone of the Month award in March for his 50-goal achievement.
STERLING shattered Chicago's 12-year-old single-season franchise record for goals by a rookie in the first 20 games of the 2006-07 season. During the course of his rookie campaign, he also broke the club record for points by a first-year player and established a franchise record by notching a marker in nine consecutive games from Dec. 12 to Dec. 29.
LEHMAN appeared in three outings for the Gladiators last week after being reassigned from the Wolves on Oct. 31. The 21-year-old blueliner notched one assist and a fighting major in his first action this season.
