Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE - A quartet of Curve pitchers dazzled on Monday night at Erie as the Curve grabbed the decisive game against the SeaWolves at Jerry Uht Park, 2-1.
The Curve (41-54) took three out of four with the win, as the combination of Kyle Bloom, Jeff Sues, Josh Shortslef and Ronald Belisario combined to hold the SeaWolves to just three hits.
Bloom (2-4) picked up his second win of the season and second in as many starts after he allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings of work. Bloom struck out six batters in the effort.
All of the Curve offense came in the top of the fourth inning off SeaWolves right-hander Eddie Bonine (0-1). An RBI double by Luis Cruz plated Steve Lerud to give the Curve a 1-0 advantage. Cruz would later cross the plate that inning when Bonine attempted to pick off Jason Bowers at first base, but was but his throw was wide of the target. The errant throw proved to be the only insurance run Altoona would need.
After Bloom silenced the Erie (39-58) bats through five innings, Sues came on to pitch two innings and allowed one unearned run. Sues struck out five batters, including three straight with the potential tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh.
Shortslef pitched a scoreless frame in the eighth, while Belisario enjoyed a one-two-three ninth inning to notch his second save of the season, and second of the series.
The Altoona Curve will enjoy the next two days off during the Eastern League All-Star Break. The Curve will return to action at Blair County Ballpark on Thursday evening to open an eight-day homestand beginning with the first of a four game series against the Harrisburg Senators at 7:05 p.m.
The Zooperstars will be on hand to entertain fans throughout the night. Fans can also enjoy great drink specials on Thirsty Thursday. Following Thursday's game, fans can join Curve players and front office staff members for a post-game party at the Hotel Belmar.
Great seats for Thursday's game and the rest of the Curve's nine-game, eight-day homestand still remain. Fans can purchase Curve tickets over the phone at 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office.
NOTES - Jason Delaney's hitting streak was stopped at 15 games with an 0-for-4 performance...The streak was the longest such streak by a Curve player since 2004...The series win against Erie was the first Curve series win since Altoona recorded a three-game series sweep against the Bowie Baysox on June 20-23.
